The story is set in a future Japan, 10 years after a biological hazard known as the "Apocalypse Virus" caused a state of emergency called "Lost Christmas". An international organization called the GHQ intervened and restored order at the cost of Japan's independence. The plot follows Shu Ouma, a high school student who accidentally gains a powerful ability called the "Power of the King," which allows him to extract "Voids"—weapons or tools that reflect a person's heart—from other people. He is then drawn into a conflict between the GHQ and a rebel group called Funeral Parlor, which is fighting to liberate Japan.
